Completed Projects

Kama Sutra (with HappyScans)

Those of you who have read the ancient Hindu text may recall that it is, contrary to popular perception, 20% sex and 80% home and life management.  Nagai's version is about 40% sex, 60% Indiana Jones.  Read it because you have to know why that dude just fucked two naked cultist slaves and then fed them to a giant snake.

Bestia (with HappyScans)

In Ikegami Ryoichi's own words:
'The power at that time exterminated the legendary tribe, Saishi,
who were the vicious warriors inherited by beasts.
the tribe was beyond the boundary of human nature,
and even had poisonous blood.
Gen Tsukinosuke, half beast and half human, has fatefully blood relation with Saishi,
and pronounces the death sentence on all.'

Beyond The End 1-7

Setouchi's series of sidestory / what-if ero-doujinshi for the Monster Girl Quest games.

Dirty Christ Superstar (with HappyScans)

Much less fanservice-y than its title and cover would suggest.  The brief, heartwarming(?) tale of a sociopathic actor who has elevated performing Broadway musicals to the level of a superpower being blackmailed into training the daughter he didn't know he had.  Done as a Christmas surprise.

Mist Story (with HappyScans)

Another Nagai horror collection for this past Halloween.  Highlights include a ghost baby nipple vampire, the world's most suspicious snowman, and a group of girls who take an uncomfortably sexual pleasure in sticking pins into bugs.

Cinderella Knight (with HappyScans)

A classic fairytale retold as only Nagai Go knows how.  (Would anyone else have thought to make the fairy godmother a dragon from space?)  This is one of those rare series Nagai drew for a shoujo anthology, and if that isn't enough to scare you off, the BDSM dungeons, over-powered naked horse-man, and inconclusive ending just might.  For everyone else, enjoy the madness.

Vita Arcana (with HappyScans)

I'm honestly not sure what happened to this series, but it appears to have vanished mysteriously after its first volume.  A historical fiction about the brief reign of the Roman Emperor Macrinus and the rise of his successor, the mad child emperor Elagabalus, the main plot focuses on a wealthy, scheming border commander and his hermaphroditic assassin ward.  Japanese friends of mine assumed it was an ero-manga when they saw the cover.

Black Lion (with HappyScans)

The ninja epic Nagai claims inspired Terminator.  A lone ninja pits his wits and skill against Oda Nobunaga's alien-backed army of cyborgs.  It may not have the charm of the awful dub, but it gets even crazier than the OAV.

Iron Virgin Jun (with HappyScans)

One of the less-terrible Nagai Go erotic comedies.  A super-strong rich girl runs away with her butler because her mother wants her to get married, so her mother puts a bounty on her virginity and the two are forced to contend with an army of would-be rapists (including Devilman's Asuka Ryo in a top hat).

Blade of the Immortal (volumes 28-30, with HappyScans)

The final volumes of Blade of the Immortal.  This is the only series I've done which has also been released officially in English, but the way the official release is flipped is incredibly bizarre, so I don't feel too guilty about it.  This is the only occasion I regret completely omitting honorifics.

Shin Violence Jack (with HappyScans)

The sequel (?) to Violence Jack, and possibly to other Devilman series as well, featuring a pirate crew inspired by Marvel Comics characters and a an evil army of Romance of the Three Kingdoms re-enactors.  Beware the characteristic Nagai non-ending.

Go Nagai Horror Collection: Skull Manor (Dokuro no yakata) (with HappyScans)

A collection of Nagai Go's horror stories, translated as a Halloween surprise.

Devilman Lady (volumes 4-17, with HappyScans)

Nagai Go's characteristically mad sequel to Devilman, Devilman Lady is the epic tale of one woman's meandering struggle with mutant monsters, self-image, psychic stalkers, lesbian sharks, Dante's Inferno, Hulk-like loss of clothing, and a truly staggering amount of rape.  I handled the translation and typesetting, but not cleaning or editing.  This was also my first project while studying in Japan.

Getter Robo Arc (translation for Dynamic Pro Scanlations)

The final, incomplete entry in the Getter Robo Saga.

Getter Robo G (translation for Dynamic Pro Scanlations)

The second installment of Ishikawa Ken's Getter Robo series.  Translated from the Getter Robo Saga edition.  I provided the translated script, but was involved with neither cleaning nor typesetting.  As an aside, when I was living in Ishikawa Prefecture (Ishikawa-ken) Ishikawa Ken's name led to a great deal of confusion in conversation.

Devilman vs Getter Robo (hosted by Dynamic Pro Scanlations)

A 'what if' scenario in the tradition of the old Dynamic Productions crossover movies.  It features both Devilman and Getter Robo, but in both cases the characters are closer to their TV anime incarnations than to the manga versions.  This was done at the same time as Amon and is similarly rough work, but contains fewer real errors.

Amon: The Dark Side of Devilman (hosted by Dynamic Pro Scanlations)

A sequel/spin-off/alternate ending of the original Devilman, notable more for its art than its writing.  This was my first ever translation project, undertaken before I had lived in Japan, so there are some quite frankly embarrassing errors in both the script and the image editing (although neither should really impair comprehension), but at least it remains a significant improvement on the previous incomplete effort, which managed to completely miss negatives on a regular basis.
